Freedom is not the natural state of man. There are always those who would exert power over others. Too often people are willing to trade their individual freedoms for the fleeting promise of security of a government program or for "the greater good." But freedom should never be sacrificed in the name of someone else's self-serving "greater good." Freedom is the greater good. Thirty-five authors living in seven countries tackle this issue in Forging Freedom—a collection of stories from our contributors' personal and family histories; stories as people pictured today's headlines and imagined how freedom tomorrow may be impacted; stories imagining freedom from a world suspending reality or far into a hopeful future. Our contributors hail from across the globe, united in the idea that freedom is the right state of man. It is something that must be preserved, fought for, and won. And when it lost, freedom is something that must be forged once again.

As with any anthology, some stories appealed to me more than others. In general I found them well written, well edited, and interesting. I love the fact that the settings range from historical to futuristic, and from next door to across the world and beyond. The huge variety of plots and writing styles kept me reading from one story to the next.
An eclectic compilation of well-written, thought-provoking and poignantly powerful stories, real and imagined, about individuals who make conscious decisions to take control of their own lives and destinies. For me, one of the most inspirational stories is “The Color of Sacrifice.†Written by her granddaughter, this is the true account of a Black girl, orphaned soon after birth, growing up in the South during the Depression who, despite many struggles, never lost sight of her goals and became a beloved pillar of strength, guidance and compassion for the many people whose lives she so profoundly touched. At a time when we're sometimes too distracted by technology and media to think much about freedom, these stories are an important reminder.
Good stories of liberty. Actually got this book from one of the story writers at a comic convention in san diego (not comic con).
Great stories!
Inspiring stories of courage, values and integrity. Concise stories of our past, present and future. Important for all of us to remember how these freedoms are hard won.
Forging Freedom has such a variety of stories on all sorts of freedom freedom to weave hair without the government requiring a thousand hours of course work; freedom to buy food and necessities without permission from those in power; freedom to speak your mind; freedom to read any library book you'd like, and freedom to serve your country and not be ostracized when you return home. Most of the stories in this book are creative and easy reading or based on true accounts. A couple seem to be taken directly from an economics textbook. Two stories I really enjoyed were about a mother who rescued her sons from a Revolutionary War prison, and a touching story about a model train club. One quote by Ronald Reagan had me laughing out loud, and a story about a Vietnam refugee had me teary-eyed. I enjoyed the selection of varied stories in this anthology.
